Game Review – Battlefield Bad Company 2

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is Electronic Arts’ latest first-person shooter to hit the Playstation 3, Windows, and Xbox 360 game platforms. Released March 3, 2010, it is the direct sequel to Battlefield: Bad Company, resembling much of the same gameplay as its predecessor.

Bad Company 2 includes all of the same modes of transportation the first title did and then some, adding vehicles like the UH-60 Black hawk, patrol boats, and quadrunners. Weapons are a major appeal to this title. From sidearms to heavy metal, each weapon performs in an incredibly realistic fashion.

Featuring what Electronic Arts calls “Destruction 2.0″, the game’s destructible environments allow for more carnage than ever before, as players can now completely destroy a building as opposed to just blowing up small portions of it. Aside from Battlefield Vietnam, it is the only other game in the Battlefield series to display blood right out of the box without any mods. A highly enhanced AI provides squadmates that actually are worth the pixels they are drawn on, actually engaging in combat, reacting to destruction, and eliminating the bad guys rather than just sitting around serving as cannon fodder.

Bad Company 2 is far more cinematic and engaging than the first one. Its single-player mode, however, runs the risk of appearing too “linear” and constrictive with advanced gamers. Fortunately, its multi-player mod tops even the excellent gameplay of the original, present a large variety of online modes and maps. The title’s multi-player gaming, with all of the improvements of the title in general, only makes the already-pleasant gaming experience found in the original just that much better. The graphics include more detailed characters, levels, and special effects.

Sound is done nicely as well, with humorous voice acting for squadmates and intense background music that adds realism to the gaming experience.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 received outstanding reviews throughout the gaming community, with the most notable ratings as follows:

IGN – 8.9 out of 10
Game Informer – 9.5 out of 10
GameZone – 9.25 out of 10
Gametrailers 9.1 out of 10

Reviews praised Bad Company 2 for its fast gameplay, excellent graphics, compelling sound, and exciting multi-player mode. A difficult feat to accomplish as a sequel, Bad Company 2 has lived up to its heritage. The most obvious complaint keeping the expert reviewers from giving Bad Company 2 a full “10″ was the single-player mode not being able to keep up with its multi-player counterpart. GameZone, for example, had the following comments, “even though the single-player campaign still isn’t where it needs to be, Bad Company 2 is definitely a great sequel that builds on its predecessor in every way, making for one that no shooter fan will want to miss, especially if you go online for your gaming.” Whether this problem is due to the single-player mode disappointing or the multi-player mode being just too good to compare is left up to the player.
